Things to do in St Lucia

Head to the beach

Anse Chastanet Beach is one of the most picturesque stretches of sand in the whole of the Caribbean, with its gentle clear water and palm tree-lined beauty. St Lucia’s eastern beaches tend to be quite unique, as nature has created a snaking coastline, jutting in different ways depending on the location.

Beaches on the North Coast such as Rodney Bay can get quite crowded, but Choc Bay is quieter, with tranquil waters and sands sheltered by many palm trees. For a truly quiet, secluded retreat of a beach, try Marigot Bay which is surrounded by hills on three sides and is ideal for a relaxing day at the beach.

Most of the South Coast’s beaches can be reached solely by boat, but doing so can put you in deal locations featuring black volcanic sands and romantic hideaways, great snorkelling and diving locations, and views of the Pitons.

The street parties and festivals

Every month brings the longest running street party in the Caribbean – the famous Gros Islet Friday Night Street Party. The party features DJs, fun-loving Caribbean music, BBQ food, plenty of drinks (look out for the rum punch) and some pretty spectacular dancing. These parties are very popular amongst both tourists and locals and it’s a great way to mingle and have a great time. Dates are announced monthly.

If you’re not around at the right time for the Gros Islet party, you might like to head to Anse La Raye’s Seafood Friday. There’s music, dance and, of course, plenty of delicious fresh seafood cooked to perfection.

Yearly in mid-October is the Feast of La Marguerite, a floral cultural festival featuring floral displays, a parade, and singing. In December, the Festival of Lights and Renewal is a great chance to experience beautiful light displays, light sculptures, lantern processions, music and more to celebrate St Lucian culture and the Christmas season.

In the middle of summer, July brings the Saint Lucia Carnival, a grand and exciting celebration featuring St Lucian art displays, cultural music and dance, great food, community and a fantastic parade to top it all off.

Retail therapy

St Lucia might not be famous as a shopping destination, and it certainly doesn’t have large malls or upmarket stores, but there are still plenty of opportunities to get your shopping fix while on holiday. The markets are one of the most fun ways to buy things. There are stalls selling locally made silk screened fabrics, art, straw weavings, pottery and wood carvings from the many local artists.

There are a number of great deals to be had on brand names too – they are usually available at duty-free prices. Point Seraphine in Castries has a large number of shops for you to look through.

Ideal as a multi-centre destination

St Lucia’s main airport is in the south of the island, but in the north, near the capital Castries, there is the domestic airport George F. L. Charles Airport. This makes it very practical and possible to visit another Caribbean island after your stay in St Lucia is over.
