Overview

This excellent seven-night road safari is perfect for anyone looking to combine a safari and beach holiday as the safari starts in Nairobi and finishes in Mombasa. Your safari experience starts in the iconic Masai Mara Reserve, gradually working your way to the east seeing all game parks on the way.  The safari uses road transport making it great value compared to flying options as well as cutting out an additional flight to get to the coast.

The safari starts on a Sunday, and you’ll stay at three game locations: Masai Mara Game Reserve, Amboseli National Park, Tsavo West and Taita Hills Sanctuary. The 4x4 purpose-built safari vehicle takes up to seven people on each journey, so you’re guaranteed excellent views.

Important Luggage Restriction: Soft Sided Bags only, with max weight of 15kg. Larger bags for your onward journey to a beach location can be stored in Nairobi for a small fee.

Day 1

You will be met from your international flight at the airport and transferred straight to your Nairobi hotel for the night, where you will be briefed on your meeting time for day two by your driver/guide.  Most flights arrive quite late to it is the perfect start to have a drink and snacks in the bar after checking in before getting an essential good night’s rest before your safari adventure commences early the next day.

Day 2

After an early breakfast, set off on your safari in your purpose build 4x4 vehicle with your driver guide who will be with you for the entire trip.  The 250 km drive is around 4.5 hours. As you move away from Nairobi the landscape increasingly becomes more impressive, building the excitement of heading towards Kenya’s leading game area.

You will arrive at your lodge located in the heart of the Masai Mara in time for lunch.  No doubt you will have stopped a few times between the reserve entrance and the lodge to see your first game.  Later that afternoon, experience your first full game drive in the reserve until sunset, returning for your evening meal at the lodge.

Overnight: Keekorok Lodge, Masai Mara, Full Board

Day 3

Enjoy a full breakfast before setting off very early for your morning game drive.  You will be back for lunch and have time for a few hours relaxation at the lodge before setting off for your evening game drive. Your driver will make sure you set off in search of any species you have not managed to spot yet. The Mara is so full of wildlife there is a very good chance you will get to see all the animals you are hoping to.

Day 4

After an early breakfast, it is time to move on to your next location, Lake Naivasha.  You will have around 225km to travel taking around four hours.  This is a great stop in the middle of a busy safari as it allows you to relax and catch your breath before you set off again with full on game viewing.

You will arrive in time for lunch and then head out onto the lake in the afternoon for a boat ride taking in the tranquil scenery and birdlife.

Day 5

An early start, as its time to move on again.  Set off for the Amboseli National Park with its breath-taking view of Mount Kilimanjaro.  This drive quite a long one, around 300km taking six hours, but well worth it when you get there.

Once there, you will immediately be back out for a game drive in the park.  If you are lucky, you will get a full view of Kilimanjaro that is usually part covered by clouds.  With that backdrop enjoy the wildlife including incredible elephant.

Day 6

After breakfast, it’s time to move again to Tsavo West. The area is only 100km away, so around three hours plus the stops for wildlife spotting on your way out and into the next park.

You will have time for a leisurely lunch before heading off on your afternoon game drive which includes a visit to Mzimba Springs where you can experience their underwater viewing holes.

Day 7

After breakfast, you will head to your last stop, Taita Hills.  This is a further 150km away so around three hours again.

Taita Hills is a private wildlife sanctuary which lies adjacent to the Tsavo National Park and your lodge is unique in its design and the experience you will have there.

Arrive in time for lunch at the Taita Hills Safari Lodge before you head to your overnight lodge. You will have a short afternoon game drive before you spend the rest of the day watching game at your leisure from the vantage point of the stilted lodge overlooking the water hole and saltlick.

Day 8

It is time to end your safari and head to Mombasa for your much needed relaxation at the beach after a busy safari.  It is 200km to the centre of Mombasa, so depending on your hotel location on the coast it will take around three to four hours to get you to your hotel.
