A vibrant and lively destination

The second largest city in Croatia, Split is the place to be if you want to experience the true authentic Dalmatian lifestyle. The people here are warm and friendly, welcoming you in to experience days filled with thrilling adventure, leisurely coffee breaks and afternoons whiled away exploring shops and bars in Diocletian’s Palace.

Split really has a zest for life. To the locals, there’s nothing better than enjoying drinks with friends along the waterfront, listening to live folk music in the streets and dining on black risotto and fish stew in busy restaurants. It’s a city that’s been thriving on the little joys in life since the 4th century, and we think you will love the experience.

Split is also a great gateway to the smaller islands of Hvar and Brac.

Why visit Split?

  • There’s always an exciting buzz whilst exploring Split. It’s a city that’s been lived in, and no matter which time of year you visit you’ll instantly feel the laidback, fun vibe this city radiates. Walk along the Riva (a pedestrianised waterfront), adorned with swaying palms and regularly frequented by locals and travellers sipping rich Croatian coffee or enjoying an aperitif to traditional folk music called ‘klapa’. The steps of the Peristyle in the main square is also a lovely spot – come sunset live music plays and the locals sit to enjoy it together.  There’s never a dull or quiet moment in Split, so perfect for those who like to immerse themselves in the local lifestyle at every moment.
  • Split is steeped in heritage, especially as much of the bar, restaurant and shopping scene resides in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Diocletian’s Palace. An ancient palace built for the Roman emperor Diocletian back in the turn of the 4th century AD, now the winding cobbled streets, ancient architecture and narrow alleys are inundated with bustling cafes and shops dotted amongst medieval churches and Roman ruins. The atmosphere is electric at all times of day here.
  • There are lots of things to see and do in Split. Venture to Marjan Forest to see the lush pine trees covering the western tip and spend an afternoon hiking and discovering small coves for swimming. Then take a trip to Cetina river for thrilling activities including canyoning, ziplining and sea kayaking. There are plenty of fascinating museums and galleries too, including the Croatian National Theatre the Split Nomad Gallery that celebrates local artists every week.
